whisker ['wIskq], receive [rI'si:v], reply [rI'plaI]
The soldier with the green whiskers was still on guard before the door, but he let them in at once, and they were again met by the beautiful green girl, who showed each of them to their old rooms at once, so they might rest until the Great Oz was ready to receive them.
The soldier had the news carried straight to Oz that Dorothy and the other travelers had come back again, after destroying the Wicked Witch; but Oz made no reply.
They thought the Great Wizard would send for them at once, but he did not (они думали, что Великий Волшебник тут же пошлет за ними, но он /этого/ не сделал). They had no word from him the next day, nor the next, nor the next (не получили они известий от него ни на следующий день, ни на /после/ следующий, ни на /после-после/ следующий; word — слово; вести, известие, сообщение). The waiting was tiresome and wearing (ожидание было утомительным и изматывающим; wearing — утомительный; неинтересный; to wear — носить; изнашивать; изнурять), and at last they grew vexed that Oz should treat them in so poor a fashion (и, наконец, они рассердились на то, что Оз обращается с ними столь недостойным образом; to vex — досаждать, раздражать, сердить; to be vexed with smb. — рассердиться на кого-либо; poor — бедный, малоимущий; дурной, неблагородный), after sending them to undergo hardships and slavery (после того, как послал их сносить трудности и рабство; to undergo — испытывать, переносить; подвергаться). So the Scarecrow at last asked the green girl to take another message to Oz (так что наконец Страшила попросил зеленую девушку отнести еще одно сообщение Озу), saying if he did not let them in to see him at once (сказав, что если он немедленно не впустит их, чтобы /они могли/ встретиться с ним) they would call the Winged Monkeys to help them (они позовут Крылатых Обезьян к себе на помощь), and find out whether he kept his promises or not (и выяснят, держит ли он свои обещания или нет; to keep держать, не отдавать; сдержать /слово, обещание/).
tiresome ['taIqsqm], wearing ['we(q)rIN], vex [veks], fashion ['fxS(q)n], undergo ["Andq'gqu], hardship ['hQ:dSIp], slavery ['sleIv(q)rI]
They thought the Great Wizard would send for them at once, but he did not. They had no word from him the next day, nor the next, nor the next. The waiting was tiresome and wearing, and at last they grew vexed that Oz should treat them in so poor a fashion, after sending them to undergo hardships and slavery. So the Scarecrow at last asked the green girl to take another message to Oz, saying if he did not let them in to see him at once they would call the Winged Monkeys to help them, and find out whether he kept his promises or not.
When the Wizard was given this message (когда это сообщение было передано Волшебнику) he was so frightened that he sent word for them (он был так напуган, что передал им сообщение /в котором говорилось/; to send — посылать) to come to the Throne Room at four minutes after nine o'clock the next morning (/чтобы они/ пришли в Тронный Зал в четыре минуты десятого: «в четыре минуты после девяти часов» на следующее утро). He had once met the Winged Monkeys in the Land of the West (он уже однажды встречался с Крылатыми Обезьянами в Стране Запада), and he did not wish to meet them again (и он больше не хотел встречаться с ними снова).
The four travelers passed a sleepless night (четверо путешественников провели бессонную ночь), each thinking of the gift Oz had promised to bestow on him (так как каждый думал о том даре, которым Оз обещал наградить его; to bestow — давать, даровать, награждать). Dorothy fell asleep only once (Дороти заснула только однажды), and then she dreamed she was in Kansas (и тогда ей приснилось, что она была в Канзасе), where Aunt Em was telling her how glad she was to have her little girl at home again (где Тетушка Эм говорила ей, как рада она была, что ее маленькая девочка снова была дома).
sleepless ['sli:plIs], gift [gIft], bestow [bI'stqu]
When the Wizard was given this message he was so frightened that he sent word for them to come to the Throne Room at four minutes after nine o'clock the next morning. He had once met the Winged Monkeys in the Land of the West, and he did not wish to meet them again.
The four travelers passed a sleepless night, each thinking of the gift Oz had promised to bestow on him. Dorothy fell asleep only once, and then she dreamed she was in Kansas, where Aunt Em was telling her how glad she was to have her little girl at home again.
Promptly at nine o'clock the next morning the green-whiskered soldier came to them (ровно в девять часов следующего утра солдат с зеленой бородой пришел к ним; promptly — быстро, сразу; точно, своевременно), and four minutes later they all went into the Throne Room of the Great Oz (и четырьмя минутами позже все они вошли в Тронный Зал Великого Оза).
Of course each one of them expected to see the Wizard in the shape he had taken before (конечно, каждый из них ожидал увидеть Волшебника в том самом облике, который тот принимал ранее), and all were greatly surprised when they looked about and saw no one at all in the room (и все они были сильно удивлены, когда, осмотревшись вокруг, они вовсе никого не увидели в комнате). They kept close to the door and closer to one another (они держались близко к двери, и еще ближе друг к другу), for the stillness of the empty room was more dreadful (потому что спокойствие пустой комнаты было более ужасающим; stillness — неподвижность, спокойствие, тишина) than any of the forms they had seen Oz take (чем любой из обликов, которые, как они видели, принимал Оз).
promptly ['prOm(p)tlI], whiskered ['wIskqd], stillness ['stIlnIs]
Promptly at nine o'clock the next morning the green-whiskered soldier came to them, and four minutes later they all went into the Throne Room of the Great Oz.
Of course each one of them expected to see the Wizard in the shape he had taken before, and all were greatly surprised when they looked about and saw no one at all in the room. They kept close to the door and closer to one another, for the stillness of the empty room was more dreadful than any of the forms they had seen Oz take.
Presently they heard a solemn Voice (вскоре они услышали торжественный Голос; solemn — священный; торжественный), that seemed to come from somewhere near the top of the great dome (который, казалось, раздавался откуда-то из-под огромного купола: «рядом с верхом огромного купола»), and it said (и который сказал): "I am Oz, the Great and Terrible (я — Оз, Великий и Грозный). Why do you seek me (почему вы ищете меня)?"
They looked again in every part of the room (они снова взглянули на каждую часть комнаты = заглянули в каждый уголок комнаты), and then, seeing no one, Dorothy asked (и затем, /после того как они/ никого не увидели, Дороти спросила), "Where are you (где ты)?"
"I am everywhere (я везде)," answered the Voice, "but to the eyes of common mortals I am invisible (но для глаз простых смертных я невидим; common — общий, всеобщий; обыкновенный, простой). I will now seat myself upon my throne (сейчас я сяду на свой трон), that you may converse with me (чтобы вы смогли разговаривать со мной)." Indeed, the Voice seemed just then to come straight from the throne itself (в самом деле, казалось, что Голос шел прямо от самого трона); so they walked toward it and stood in a row while Dorothy said (тогда они подошли к нему и встали в ряд, а Дороти сказала): "We have come to claim our promise, O Oz (мы пришли потребовать исполнения обещанного нам, о Оз; promise — обещание)."
presently ['prez(q)ntlI], mortal [mO:tl], invisible [In'vIzqbl], converse [kqn'vq:s]
Presently they heard a solemn Voice, that seemed to come from somewhere near the top of the great dome, and it said: "I am Oz, the Great and Terrible. Why do you seek me?" They looked again in every part of the room, and then, seeing no one, Dorothy asked, "Where are you?"
"I am everywhere," answered the Voice, "but to the eyes of common mortals I am invisible. I will now seat myself upon my throne, that you may converse with me." Indeed, the Voice seemed just then to come straight from the throne itself; so they walked toward it and stood in a row while Dorothy said: "We have come to claim our promise, O Oz."
"What promise (какого еще обещанного)?" asked Oz.
"You promised to send me back to Kansas when the Wicked Witch was destroyed (ты обещал отправить меня обратно в Канзас, когда Злая Ведьма будет уничтожена)," said the girl.
"And you promised to give me brains (и ты обещал дать мне мозги)," said the Scarecrow.
"And you promised to give me a heart (и ты обещал дать мне сердце)," said the Tin Woodman.
"And you promised to give me courage (и ты обещал дать мне смелость)," said the Cowardly Lion.
"Is the Wicked Witch really destroyed (а действительно ли Злая Ведьма уничтожена)?" asked the Voice, and Dorothy thought it trembled a little (спросил Голос, и Дороти подумала, что он немного дрожал).
"Yes," she answered, "I melted her with a bucket of water (я растопила ее ведром воды)."
promise ['prOmIs], brain [breIn], heart [hQ:t], courage ['kArIdZ], bucket ['bAkIt]
"What promise?" asked Oz.
"You promised to send me back to Kansas when the Wicked Witch was destroyed," said the girl.
"And you promised to give me brains," said the Scarecrow.
"And you promised to give me a heart," said the Tin Woodman.
"And you promised to give me courage," said the Cowardly Lion.
"Is the Wicked Witch really destroyed?" asked the Voice, and Dorothy thought it trembled a little.
"Yes," she answered, "I melted her with a bucket of water."
"Dear me (Боже мой)," said the Voice, "how sudden (как неожиданно)! Well, come to me tomorrow, for I must have time to think it over (что ж, приходите ко мне завтра, потому что мне нужно время, чтобы /все/ это обдумать)."
"You've had plenty of time already (у тебя уже было достаточно времени; plenty — изобилие, достаток; множество, избыток)," said the Tin Woodman angrily (сказал Железный Дровосек сердито).
"We shan't wait a day longer (мы не станем ждать ни дня дольше)," said the Scarecrow.
"You must keep your promises to us (ты должен сдержать свои обещания, /которые ты дал/ нам)!" exclaimed Dorothy (воскликнула Дороти).
The Lion thought it might be as well to frighten the Wizard (Лев подумал, что стоит, пожалуй, напугать Волшебника), so he gave a large, loud roar (поэтому он издал внушительный громкий рык), which was so fierce and dreadful (который был таким свирепым и страшным) that Toto jumped away from him in alarm (что Тото отпрыгнул от него в страхе; alarm — тревога, сигнал опасности; смятение, страх) and tipped over the screen that stood in a corner (и опрокинул ширму, которая стояла в углу; to tip — наклонять; опрокидывать). As it fell with a crash (когда она с грохотом упала) they looked that way (они посмотрели в том направлении), and the next moment all of them were filled with wonder (и в следующее же мгновение все из них преисполнились удивления).
sudden ['sAdn], plenty ['plentI], angrily ['xNgrIlI], alarm [q'lQ:m], screen [skri:n]
"Dear me," said the Voice, "how sudden! Well, come to me tomorrow, for I must have time to think it over."
"You've had plenty of time already," said the Tin Woodman angrily.
"We shan't wait a day longer," said the Scarecrow.
"You must keep your promises to us!" exclaimed Dorothy.
The Lion thought it might be as well to frighten the Wizard, so he gave a large, loud roar, which was so fierce and dreadful that Toto jumped away from him in alarm and tipped over the screen that stood in a corner. As it fell with a crash they looked that way, and the next moment all of them were filled with wonder.
For they saw (потому что они увидели), standing in just the spot the screen had hidden (что на том самом месте, которое как раз загораживала ширма, стоял; spot — пятнышко; место; to hide — прятать; закрывать, загораживать), a little old man (маленький старичок: «старый мужчина»), with a bald head (с лысой головой) and a wrinkled face (и морщинистым лицом), who seemed to be as much surprised as they were (который, казалось, был так же сильно удивлен, как и они). The Tin Woodman, raising his axe, rushed toward the little man and cried out (Железный Дровосек, подняв свой топор, бросился к невысокого роста мужчине и закричал), "Who are you (кто ты такой)?"
