Понятие фронтира не устраивало Уайта еще и по той причине, что, согласно Тернеру, граница незаселенных территорий исчезла в 1890 г., тем самым завершив эпоху «освоения Запада», и все последующее развитие западных штатов следовало теперь рассматривать лишь в общеамериканском контексте. «Новые историки Запада» привели в своих трудах многочисленные примеры того, что даже в двадцать первом веке «Запад» остается особым регионом США и требует соответствующих подходов к изучению.

Ключевой особенностью Запада Уайт призвал считать его экологическую организацию, сформированную не только, и не столько в результате прихода «белых англо-американцев», но являющуюся наследием долгих веков развития индейской и испанской цивилизации, в их сложном взаимодействии с региональными природными комплексами. Задолго до приближения к Великим равнинам «линии фронтира» (кстати говоря, Уайт практически полностью отказался от использования этого слова в своих трудах, равно как и устойчивых выражений-мифологем «Дикий Запад», «Virgin land») на этих землях образовалась специфическая культурно-экологическая модель, которую не смогли до конца разрушить бурные события 19—20 вв.

Пути исторического развития привели американский Запад к превращению в «один из главных культурных перекрестков планеты» (выражение П. Лимерик). Здесь плотнее, чем где бы то ни было, взаимодействуют «индейцы, латиноамериканцы, англоамериканцы, афроамериканцы и американцы азиатского происхождения». Естественно, что каждая из этих групп имеет свою историю появления в регионе, занимает особую культурно-экологическую нишу (в это понятие Уайт и его коллеги включают и города, как особую среду обитания, искусственно созданную человеком), состоит в некоторых, исторически обусловленных, отношениях с другими группами. Изучение всех этих аспектов «новые историки Запада» считают сегодня своей первоочередной задачей. В этом они находят поддержку у широкой публики, и в академической среде, о чем свидетельствуют рост книжных продаж и увеличение численности региональной профессиональной «Ассоциации историков Запада».
